Recyclable plastics are classified by the type of resin used during the processing
of the product. Plastic products can be distinguished by checking for one of the
following numbers on the container. Below is a summary of recyclable plastic resins
generally found in household packaged products. #1-Polyethylene
Terephthalate (PETE) A lightweight, transparent, rigid plastic commonly used to
make soft drink bottles. #2-High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) used extensively
for bottles that hold contents such as milk, motor oils, detergents, some shampoos.
#3-Vinyl/Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) used in making building materials such
as pipe, siding, and flooring. Also used for several types of bottles including
cooking oil and water, as well as for meat, poultry and shrink-wrap. #4-Low
Density Polyethylene (LDPE) used primarily for making various types of film such
as wraps for baked goods and meats, shopping bags, grocery bags and garbage bags. #5-Polypropylene
(PP) A heavy duty plastic which is used to make things like appliances, pipe,
battery cases, and luggage as well as cheese wraps and cereal box liners. #6-Polystyrene
